News from the Desk ... and a Gift from Library Journal

The sun is shining on San Francisco as I write this ... an April sunshine, full of golden poppies and ocean breeze.

It seems as though I turned around and here we are, almost five months into the new year. And what a year!

I've been able to hold an advanced reading copy of my book in my hand, see it off to be reviewed, donate it to conference auctions, give it to those tireless soldiers of the publishing industry, independent bookstores, and send it to libraries. I'm still in the ARC process now ... what an amazing, incredible feeling.

Left Coast Crime was a glorious time! What a wonderful conference ... I saw old friends, met new ones, discovered more authors to read. Participated in two terrific panels and an "Endless Conversation" ... and I can't wait until Hawaii next year!

NOX DORMIENDA is now available on-line for pre-order at the usual major sellers (Barnes and Noble, Amazon) and a few not so usual. You can find it described (so far) in Japanese, German, French and Danish, on various international bookseller sites ... another "wow" moment. You can always order it from your favorite bookstore by giving them the ISBN numbers ... details on my ORDER page.

I've saved the biggest news for last. Waiting for first reviews is a kind of purgatory all authors must face--and it's particularly nerve-wracking for debut authors. What people say about us--if they say anything--can have a tremendous impact on whether or not book two sees a printing press.

The cover story of the April 15th issue of Library Journal focuses on the mystery/crime genre, offering a forecast for trends and changes. The last paragraph—"Roman noir, anyone?"—highlights NOX DORMIENDA as a debut novel that combines two hot trends in mysteries: the historical element and the resurrection of the PI/hardboiled/classic noir story. You can read the full article on line at their website.

Needless to say, I'm dazed, amazed, and very, very grateful. LJ is one of the "Big Four" of publishing trades. I'm chewing nails in the hopes that people like NOX DORMIENDA and Roman Noir ... but when I was sitting in a Latin class, I never expected anyone to tag it as "hot."

It's quite a Spring!

Thanks for reading ... and look for more website updates soon. :)
